Mike Yaros will be joining the staff of Grace as Music Director. While he hones his skills as an organist, he will arrange for a pianist or organist while he focuses on choirs and instrumentalists and on shaping our liturgical experience.
Mike Yaros is the current director of the concert bands and jazz ensemble at Fort Gratiot Middle School in the Port Huron Area School District. He has been active in Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association andhas served as the Vice-President of Solo and Ensemble, the Vice President of Band and Orchestra, Honors Band Chairpersoken, and the Emeritus chair in both District 9 and 16. Prior to his service at Fort Gratiot, he served as Director of Bands at Holland Woods Middle School during the 2014-15 school year, where he taught 6-8th grade band, jazz ensemble, and percussion ensemble. He has also taught 5th – 12th grade band, HS Choir, and HS Guitar at Landmark Academy, and was on faculty there from September 2010 through July 2014. During his tenure at Landmark, he founded the 5th grade Cadet Band, the Landmark HS Choir, the Landmark Pep Band, Drumline, and the LA Jazz Ensemble as well as the Landmark Music Booster Organization. He also composed and arranged the fight song, “Pride of the Lakers”.
From 2008 – 2010, Mr. Yaros taught K-4 general music at Rose City Elementary School and 5-8 Band at Rose City Middle School.
Mr. Yaros holds a HS diploma from Gladwin High School in Gladwin, MI, an undergraduate degree in music education from Central Michigan University, and has a Master of Music in Education degree from Vandercook College of Music in Chicago, IL.
He has also previously engaged in non-degree earning study on natural horn with Rick Seraphinof at Indiana University, jazz studies with Mike Steinel at The University of North Texas, and jazz horn with Tom Varner at The University of Seattle – Washington.
Mr. Yaros is a member of Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia men’s music fraternity, National Association for Music Education (NAFME), Michigan School Band and Orchestra Association (MSBOA), American Society of Composers, Authors and Publishers (ASCAP), and the International Society of Jazz Arrangers & Composers (ISJAC). In addition to being an educator, Mr. Yaros is an amateur composer, arranger and jazz musician. He loves to travel, work on antique tractors and cars, and is a Harley Davidson enthusiast.
